It’s important to understand the difference between Chinese internet habits and those of the West, especially for brands entering China. The chart below, by BCG, shows several key consumption differences between China and the US; differences that lead to completely new strategies to connect with Chinese audiences.

Key elements here are the greater emphasis on social communications and entertainment through the internet for China. This is in many ways due to the differences in income level; Chinese tend to make less than their western counterparts, and also have less access to entertainment venues.

The combination of these two facts leads Chinese to look elsewhere for entertainment thats easy to consume, cost effective, but still delivers a social experience shared with friends and relatives.
